THE KNAST is more than a building – it is a place in transformation. Where walls once imposed boundaries, people now come together to experience culture, dining and connection.

Origins
Behind the walls
At the beginning of the 20th century, an extraordinary prison complex was built in Groß-Lichterfelde. Constructed around 1903, its walls, towers and distinctive architecture continue to define the site to this day. Where people gather today, women once spent weeks, months or even years of their lives. Behind these walls, lives were shaped by mistakes, hope and new beginnings. Their stories made this place more than a prison – and continue to shape its character to this day.

Transformation
Renewed with respect
When the prison closed in 2010, it marked the end of more than a century behind bars. Years later, Dr Joachim Köhrich took over the historic complex and began an extensive restoration, carefully preserving its architectural heritage while giving it a new purpose. In 2024, the transformation of the former women’s prison was recognised with a heritage conservation award.

A new chapter
Where History Meets Hospitality
Where walls once divided, people now come together. The former women’s prison has become a place for culture, dining and connection. Its history remains tangible throughout the site – not as something left behind, but as a living part of what makes THE KNAST unique.
